AUTUMN INTERCLUB 2024 - WINNERS

Congratulations to all of the clubs who had teams win an Autumn Interclub pennant, in the first round of interclub for 2024. We have had a great turn out for Winter Interclub, with 66 Mens Teams and 38 Womens Teams as well as a Womens Premier Interclub.  Winter Interclub kicks off on 30 April/ 1 May.

WAIKATO GRADED CHAMPIONSHIPS 

A big thank you to United Matamata Squash Club for hosting the 2024 Waikato Graded Champs. An especially big thank you to Matt & Josh and your committee for all the work on the draws and behind the scenes. We had 78 entries overall and 13 clubs represented. 

The winners of each grade (F/J combined) have the opportunity to represent Waikato in their respective grade at the National Graded Champs at Henderson Squash Club on the 21-23 June 2024

AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR OPEN

The Australian Junior Open took place on the 8-11 April in Melbourne. The final placings for our 7 Waikato juniors are as follows:

Sophie Hodges - went in as a 3/4 seed and finished 3rd

Riley Noonan - went in as a 9/16 seed and finished 9th

Sabine Veitch - went in as a 9/16 seed and finished 17th

Hemi Gregory - went in as a 9/16 seed and finished 21st

Addy Rouse - went in as a 3/4 seed and finished 6th

Hannah Jiang - went in unseeded and finished 11th

Mila Gregory - went in unseeded and finished 12th

Everyone gave everything they had over the 4 day tournament and represented Waikato with pride. It is awesome to have a bunch of our juniors playing on the international scene.

OCEANIA JUNIOR CHAMPS

Girls U19: Sophie Hodges – started 3/4 seed, finished 3rd (out of 25 players)

Boys U17: Riley Noonan – started 9/16 seed, finished 3rd (took out a 5/8 seeded player as well as a 3/4 seeded player along the way) (out of 35 players)

Girls U15: Sabine Veitch – started as a 9/16 seed, finished 8th (took out a 5/8 seed along the way) (out of 19 players)

Boys U13: Hemi Gregory – was unseeded going into the tournament, finished 8th (out of 28 players)

Girls U11 (9 players in the draw) : Addy Rouse – started as a 3/4 seed, finished 5th, Hannah Jiang - was unseeded going into the tournament, finished 6th, Mila Gregory - was unseeded going into the tournament, finished 9th.

Overall, it was an awesome experience for the players, especially the younger ones who don’t often get the opportunity to play against players of their same age in New Zealand. They all played their hearts out and I couldn’t be prouder that they are all Waikato juniors! - Emma Millar 

JUNIOR TRANS-TASMAN SERIES 2024

Congratulations to Sophie Hodges (Hamilton) and Riley Noonan (Morrinsville), who represented NZ at the Junior Trans-Tasman Test Series following on from the AJO and Oceania Junior Champs. Emma Millar was also selected as Coach of the Junior Girls Team. 

Test 1: 15th April - Overall score NZ 6 Australia 10

Sophie beat Hannah Slyth 8-11 11-1 11-4 11-4

Riley lost to Kasper Cheung 9-11 11-5 5-11 7-11 

Test 2: 16th April

Sophie lost to Madison Lyon 8-11 11-13 8-11

Riley lost to Marcus Wang 10-12 3-11 11-6 8-11

Overall NZ couldn't defend their title from last year and lost the Test Series 12 - 20

WAIKATO OPEN RACKETBALL - RESULTS

The 2nd annual Waikato Open for Racketball was held on Saturday 20 April at Hamilton Squash & Tennis Club. There were 2 Mens Divisions and 1 Womens Division on the day. A big thank you to Richard Harris & Andrea Rogers for all your hard work behind the scenes and on the day. Thank you to those players who travelled to compete at this years Waikato Open. 

Mens Div 1: Winner - Colin Hattingh, R/UP - Cliff Nightingale

Mens Div 2: Winner - Rambo King, R/UP - Rob Pierce

Womens Div: Winner - Shari Ball, R/UP - Andrea Rogers

NEW ZEALAND JUNIOR OPEN - RESULTS

We had 9 Waikato Junior players compete at the recent New Zealand Junior Open in Palmerston North over the school holidays. It is great to see our juniors travelling away to these tournaments and competing with NZs best Juniors. A special mention to Sophie Hodges, as this is her last Junior Event before she moves into Seniors. Well done Sophie on an amazing Junior career, with multiple National Titles.
