SQUASH WAIKATO AWARDS & EXHIBITION NIGHT

The Squash Waikato Awards were held alongside an exhibition match this year, hosted by Hamilton Squash & Tennis Club on Monday 31st October. We were so incredibly lucky to be able to showcase WR#5 Joelle King & WR#4 and former #1 Mohamed Elshorbagy in our Waikato Region.

The night started off with 16 lucky Juniors getting to take the court and play some squash against Joelle, Mohamed and Emma Millar. They got the opportunity for some photos and received a signed poster at the end of the session. Next up was the presentation of the Squash Waikato Awards, led by Squash Waikato. Congratulations to all of the nominees and the award winners. The award recipients were presented their award by Squash Waikato Ambassador Joelle King.

Whilst dinner was taking place MC Phil Buscke-Somervell dived into a very honest and raw Q & A session with Joelle & Mohamed. It was great to hear their different experiences and for them to open up so much about some of the struggles they have faced, especially around the R word Retirement.

Lastly it was the main event of the night the exhibition matches. First was the doubles pairing of Zac Millar & Joelle taking on Emma Millar & Mohamed (rocking their Waikato Shirts). The match was highly entertaining, and the crowd were getting into it, as well as having some professional coaching from our Waikato Juniors. What a great experience for them! Next up it was a Battle of the Sexes match with Joelle taking on Mohamed, in what again was a very entertaining match and showcased just how athletic these two are. What a difference it is watching these two live, as opposed to on the television.

I want to say a big thank you to the following:

  • Hamilton Squash & Tennis Club for hosting the awards and exhibition night
  • Cater Plus for catering the event
  • MC Phil Buscke-Somervell
  • Squash Waikato Award Sponsors
  • Zac & Emma Millar for taking part in the night
  • Ash Matthews for photography
  • Jaimee Hunt for helping set up for the Awards Night
  • Joelle King & Mohamed Elshorbagy for taking time out of their busy schedule to put on an amazing exhibition night, as well as donating signed rackets and shirts to put up for Auction.
